At Cranbrook we follow Letters and Sounds as our phonics scheme. Phonics demonstrates the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language and the letters or groups of letters of the written language. Our pupils are taught to decode words to read through phonics. Daily phonics sessions are taught to all year groups across the school starting with Phase 1 in Nursery and finishing with Phase 6 in Year 2. In KS2, pupils move onto learning spelling rules and grammar. Identified groups of pupils within KS2 that need to continue with the Phonics Programme are identified and targeted through small group interventions and a reading programme called Lexia which also develops reading fluency and phonetic understanding.
